in the details.

SETUP & SECURITY5 MIN READ

Starting with a hardware wallet is less about mastering technology and more about building a few careful habits.

Begin by checking your device and visiting the official setup experience using a trusted bookmark or the address you typed yourself. Follow the prompts on your computer, but pay close attention to the screen on your hardware wallet: it is the place to verify what the device is actually asking you to do.

When creating a recovery backup, write each word in the order shown and check it carefully. This backup can restore access if a device is lost or damaged, so keep it somewhere private and physically secure. Never photograph it, store it in cloud notes, or enter it into a website or message. No legitimate support agent needs to see your recovery words.

As you explore, make a habit of checking recipient addresses and transaction amounts on the device before approving. Consider a small test transaction before moving a larger amount, and take time to understand network fees. Keep your software current through official channels, and be skeptical of urgent messages, giveaway promises, and links asking you to “verify” a wallet.

Self-custody means responsibility as well as control. Move at a pace that feels comfortable, protect your backup, and remember: careful verification is a powerful everyday security tool.
